Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is currently undertaking a borough wide survey of how land in Southend is used. This is a massive undertaking and aims to be completed in 2016. In order to meet this timescale volunteers are needed to help with this task.
We are surveying the landscape so that we have a clearer idea of what habitats there are, how much open space there is and how these spaces interconnect. This is covering everything from woodlands, coastal grasslands and ponds to golf courses, school grounds and waste ground.
A lot of this work can be undertaken as a desk study using aerial photography, but some of it needs to be undertaken on the ground and we need volunteers willing to walk sections of the borough to map what they see.
You don’t need to have previous experience or knowledge as training is provided and all the equipment you will need will be provided. As a volunteer, you can undertake this work to suit your own schedule once you have been trained and can do as large an area as you want. Maps are provided in 1km grid squares and you can help with just the one grid or can do many.
The training course will be held on Wednesday 23rd March from 10am until 3.30pm at the Council offices. The training will consist of a morning running through the skills followed by an afternoon in Priory Park putting those skills into practice. The training is delivered in partnership with Essex Wildlife Trust.
If you would like to volunteer for this project, put your name down for the training course or simply find out more please feel free to contact me by email or on either of the numbers below.
I look forward to hearing from you.
