SE Essex Organic Gardeners] SE Essex Organic Gardeners would love you to join…

SEEOG

SE Essex Organic Gardeners would love you to join them at their next meeting on Monday 19 September at Growing Together Westcliff at 8.00pm:

“Ben Lambert – adapting to economic and climatic change in an Essex Orchard”

Ben has been carrying out projects for his permaculture diploma at the 94 year old orchard Crapes Fruit Farm, near Colchester. There they grow both fruit and vegetables so expect a mix of no-dig farming, bio-intensive, soil re-mineralisation, forest gardening and holistic orchard management.

Growing Together Westcliff is situated on the corner of Fairfax Drive and Prittlewell Chase, Westcliff-on-Sea, SS0 9AG. Please use the entrance in Prittlewell Chase.

Non-members £2.00 – you are most welcome!

See the facebook page for more information.

Surveying Land and Wildlife

Communities__Neighbourhoods_and_the_Environment

Intrepid volunteers are mapping out how Southend land is used and where wildlife likes to live.

Their findings will be compared with a 1990s survey to see how much the borough’s land has changed, to measure the health of habitats and discover whether biodiversity has grown or shrunk.

The results will be used for a special Council report on the State of Nature.

This will give the vital evidence needed to help with future decisions about management and development.

The 12 eager volunteer surveyors have been invited to a thank you event at Porters, the residence of the Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, on Tuesday 2nd August, but there is still a chance for even more people to join their task.

Executive Councillor for Culture, Tourism and the Economy, Councillor Ann Holland said: “We are really grateful to those who have given up their time so far to take part in this fascinating project.

“There is still more work to do over the summer so we would love to hear from any other residents who would like to help out too.

“It is part of a nationwide State of Nature report launched in 2013 by 25 conservation and research organisations to give an objective overview of how British wildlife is doing.

“The plan is to produce more ‘State of’ reports in future to help build a better picture and monitor changes more closely.

“Those who volunteer for this scheme don’t need any experience, but would just need to attend a one-day training course in preparation.

“They would then be given a map of the area to focus on, and would be able to carry out the survey in their own time.”

For more information or to volunteer for the project, please contact: Louiseel-zaher@southend.gov.uk or visit the website for more information.

Southend in Transition Community Plot Update

This year we have our original plot to work on and are looking at working on a Family Plot so if you are in a blessed state, have that newborn or toddler please let us know so we can check some ideas with you what would make it an ideal place for you to bring your family to.

Potato Day makes potatoes a ‘must grow’ for local gardeners!

SEEOG’s Seed Potato Day
Saturday 27 February
10am – 2pm
Growing Together Westcliff, corner of Fairfax Drive and Prittlewell Chase, SS0 9AG

Free admission – refreshments available

Trust Links is delighted to be hosting again this year Seed Potato Day in conjunction with South East Essex Organic Gardeners on Saturday 27 February.

With approximately 40 varieties of seed potato, some organic, sold individually at 15p per tuber (same price as last year!), SE Essex Seed Potato Day gives local gardeners the chance to buy seed potatoes by the tuber, meaning anyone – from those with just enough space for a potato grow-bag, or an entire allotment plot – can get started on growing some spuds as soon as the weather improves!

There will also be Stuttgart Giant and Turbo onion sets for sale, plus organic fertiliser! Trust Links will also be selling the plants and vegetables raised in the Growing Together Garden. Refreshments will be available including jacket potatoes.

The event is free and runs from 10am until 2pm. Visitors should use the Prittlewell Chase entrance. Please check the SEEOG website for updates:
