About

Make Southend Sparkle is about taking pride and positive action to improve your local area. Volunteer your time to make positive changes where you live.

Description

Take pride in where you live and help to ‘Make Southend Sparkle’.

We live in a beautiful coastal town from the popular tourist area of Leigh-on-Sea to the wildlife rich Gunners Park in Shoeburyness. With stunning views across the estuary, numerous parks and public spaces and the glittering lights of the seafront, there is always something to interest and enthral.

Help make Southend the place to be by improving your local area. Whether it is by simply tidying your front garden, working with your neighbours to tidy up the communal alleyway behind your house or volunteering your time in some of the great local initiatives, you can help to make a real difference.

We want to hear your success stories. Maybe you and your neighbours have litter-picked your street; perhaps you have adopted an area near your home and are helping keeping it well maintained or maybe you help a friend or neighbour look after their front garden. Take before and after shots and post your stories here.

We want proactive and dedicated volunteers who are keen to take action and improve the place they live. If you have ideas of activities and want help getting your idea off the ground, or simply want to express your interest, you can email
makesouthendsparkle@southend.gov.uk

We can help with advice, support and in some instances we will be able to provide the equipment you need.

If you need to make a complaint about a problem in your local area you can contact Southend-on-Sea Borough Council in a number of ways:

Creating A Positive Revolution – A Six Week Appreciative Inquiry Course, Southend on Sea

Creating A Positive Revolution – A Six Week Appreciative Inquiry Course, Southend on Sea

The world’s full of big problems. You want to do something, but where to start?

Start with something small. Something that makes best use of your unique set of gifts. Something that begins on your doorstep – that tackles the problem in front you – and grows from there.

This course, an enhanced version of one I ran in 2012 – and this time co-delivered with Permaculture teacher and author Graham Burnett – will equip you with the skills and inspiration to Make Something Happen in your community.

I’m an Appreciative Inquiry practitioner with 10 years of working with this philosophy to help people make a difference. You don’t need to know anything about Appreciative Inquiry (have a Google!) except that it’s originator – Dr David Cooperider – describes it as a way toseek out what gives life in order to ignite the imagination of what could be. It’s used with communities all over the world: working especially well in rural communities in developing countries.

At its heart is story-telling, and finding the best in every person. Everyone has something they can DO. To quote Cooperider (because this is great and I’ve nicked a bit for the course title):

“[Appreciative Inquiry] deliberately seeks to discover people’s exceptionality – their unique gifts, strengths, and qualities. It actively searches and recognizes people for their specialities – their essential contributions and achievements. And it is based on principles of equality of voice – everyone is asked to speak about their vision of the true, the good, and the possible. Appreciative Inquiry builds momentum and success because it believes in people. It really is an invitation to a positive revolution. Its goal is to discover in all human beings the exceptional and the essential.”

Over six weeks you’ll learn how AI works and will be encouraged to build your own project. The course is interactive and practical, and the fee includes a folder with detailed handouts of each session and all exercises. We encourage a certain amount of ‘homework’ but this will be light, fun and optional.

Places are restricted to 16, and will be allocated first come first served. (We’ll start a waiting list if we get over-subscribed!)

Tutors: Sherry Fuller, Appreciative Inquiry practitioner and founder of Southend Soup, Graham Burnett, Diploma of Permaculture Design

Venue: Upstairs at The Railway Hotel, Clifftown Road (opposite Southend Central Station), Southend on Sea,

Dates: One evening a week for 6 weeks, Thursday 28 April through to Thursday 2 June

Time: 7 – 9pm

Course fee: Cost for full course £30.00 for concessions (ie students, and those not currently working.)

£50.00 for everyone else

A deposit secures your place and you can pay the remaining balance on the first night. £5 deposit for concessions, £15 deposit for non-concessions.

See more at the website.

Eden 2016

It is one of the most inspiring local events for women from all walks of life, no matter your age, background or education.

Following on from the success of E.D.E.N. Conference 2014 and 2015, we’re back with another fantastic event for you.

Inspiring female speakers who will share their stories and insights on the journeys which led them to transform their lives. All our speakers are REAL women from your community. Why? We often look for inspiration in magazines or on TV, yet forget about the amazing women who live in our community. If they can do it, you can too! If they can live the life that inspires them, you can too!

Workshops which will support you to make your own transformation – connect with your inner Goddess, connect with your passions and find the power of your voice!

Participate in fashion show “DRESS TO EXPRESS”
Find your confidence! Participate and try out different outfits, strike a pose. Smile and Shine!

Relax, celebrate or network … it’s up to you!

Opportunities to connect with speakers, delegates and women from your local community; make new friends, celebrate!

Spiralseed – Course Proposal

spiralseed

Very excited to be in discussions with Sherry Fuller about running an Appreciative Inquiry/community empowerment course for Southend on Sea in the near future – totally in resonance with the Spiralseed mission of enabling Design 4 ACTION – Active Critical Transformation In Our Neighbourhoods! We want to keep the costs as low as possible, so would be interested in any local folks who would be interested in taking part….

Southend in Transition Community Plot Update

Hi there fans and friends of https://sitcommunityallotment.wordpress.com
We had our first plot visit this year and got a cunning plan of making it even better place to meet new people, enjoy nature and growing fresh, mood and immune boosting food.
Please see dates for Taster dates open to new people below. Just come in for a cup of tea and piece of cake to see the plot and decide then if it is something you want to get involved with. Bring a friend of family. We have a core group of growers so if you want to pop in now and again that’s just right.
This year we have our original plot to work on and are looking at working on a Family Plot so if you are in a blessed state, have that newborn or toddler please let us know so we can check some ideas with you what would make it an ideal place for you to bring your family to.

OUR WAVELENGTH 2.1 : with Jay Tompt at REconomy – a business incubator for Totnes

Sarah and John were invited by Jay Tompt to Totnes’ REconomy Centre in February 2016 to see the place. We met people running really interested projects in Totnes and the surrounding areas. We discovered a place where we can set up a laptop for some quality time to work on our own projects as well as opportunities to network with others.
