Southend Soup is:
– A place where the Southend community comes together to have fun, to share soup (vegan and nut free) and to grow their ideas for Making Good Stuff Happen. Events are suitable for the whole family. On your own? Come along and make new friends.

– About hearing a few presentations (5 minutes) from people or small groups needing a small amount of funding to Make Good Stuff Happen. Ideas can be of benefit to the community, or related to the arts or business. We all vote for our favourite idea, and that idea gets a pot of money.

Funding comes from donations you pay to join in. We ask for £5 or what you can afford/want to pay. Kids are free unless they wish to donate some of their pocket money! Your donation entitles you to soup, bread and beverages as well as a vote.

Soup people make the event. Bring anything entertaining (we often have musicians, magicians and face-painting) and any crafts you want to sell, or information/stuff you wish to share.
As this is our Christmas* Party help us create a lively and happy atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.

Need volunteers over the winter months? We can provide you with an information stall and give you a chance to talk about what you need.

Collecting shoeboxes (or similar) for foodbank customers, homeless people or those in hospital over Christmas? Let us know in advance. We’ll ask Soupers to bring things along for you to collect.

Accountants celebrate Gold Charter Award

In 2015, RDP Newman Accountants in Southend achieved a Bronze Southend Business & Community Charter Award. Since then they have generally increased levels of community engagement; in particular, they committed to an eighteen-month strategy to support the wonderful Music Man Project. All employees at RDP Newman have enjoyed getting involved in a series of fundraising events and the team effort helped the firm achieve a Gold Charter Award this year.

Senior partner Paul Stafford and his colleague Joanne Upton were presented with their Charter Award certificate by Sir David Amess MP at a networking event at Space 282 in Leigh-on-Sea. The event was sponsored by Jaime Lawson, managing director of Space 282, and raised £333 for local charities.

Events arranged by RDP Newman have so far included a quiz night, name the bear competition and a hamper raffle. But perhaps the most rewarding aspect was collecting a range of musical instruments and ancillary items which were wrapped and presented to the Music Man students at a special Christmas lunch at the firm’s offices in Southend. This year, events will include entering the Colourthon, a Summer Fete / Sports Day, an abseil and more.

Apart from supporting the Music Man Project, the Charter Committee was impressed with the company’s commitment to supporting the local community in a number of other ways. The company supports young people through work experience and apprenticeships and also uses local companies in their supply chain.

As people who are variously passionate about Chelmsford’s; creativity, community, social change, culture, sustainability and heritage, I’d like to invite you to two events that can help grow our local economy significantly.

The first is the ebarts social currency event. Imagine if we could mobilise even a fraction of the skills lost to us due to a depressed economy let alone enable unemployed people, pensioners, carers and students to supplement their income and /or start up their own enterprises.

For those of us interested in community enterprise, the Community Land Trust event at the Ideas Hub is an opportunity to hear about an initiative that points towards how we might work together to make a real difference.

I was aware when the Marconi railway site was sold in 2012, that it was an amazing opportunity lost to community, because we didn’t have the active network to take advantage of it. Clearly the time wasn’t right.
