Update on Transition Drinks 25/08

Beer

Image via Wikipedia

Last weeks Transition Drinks were well attended and we had a consistent core of people and a few new faces. I enjoyed the mix and new connections were forged and we learned about each other. James told us about his mushroom growing business idea and I am going to send him some details of local businesses and contacts who might be interested and help him grow his business. Helen and Cleo who moved from Hackney told us about their work there with community gardens and Transition Hackney and would like to get involved in something like garden share. I’ll send them the details but lets get them some time to upack first:). Ian gave us more details of the Food Swap he is planning and invited people to attend, volunteer and bring produce. I have told the group about the initial outline of the Apple Weekend. All in all a nice and successful evening. I will see you next month 29th September.

Mapping Southend Food Growers and Producers

This has been on my mind for a while now. Through my and my colleagues work on Southend in Transition and our involvement with other organisations we were lucky to find out about many local individuals, projects, businesses and institutions interested or engaged in growing and producing food locally.

Some community initiative around the UK have prepared Local Food Guides and Directories or looked how to consolidate and help grow their local food networks through Local Food Hubs. With many people asking us what is happening locally, where they can buy produce and products I thought I will make a start on gathering this information in one place and display it in different formats for people to use, contribute and publicise.

1) Local organic gardeners have recently prepared a great list of local and regional suppliers here.

2) Map Mind of a possible Local Food Network project for Southend (version 0.1 work in progress)

3) Google Map – volunteer needed to create one

4) Southend food growers and producers printable booklet – work in progress
