Imagine Southend-on-Sea

Imagine Southend-on-Sea

Bringing Community Imagination to Life

You are invited to an interactive and energetic meeting to explore the possibilities of bringing the global Imagine movement to Southend-on-Sea.

Friday 5 February 2010

1.30pm – 4pm, Committee Room 10, Civic Centre

Victoria Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 6ER

Phone: 01702 215547 Email: sherryfuller@southend.gov.uk

  • What wonderful things are happening in Southend-on-Sea?

  • What could happen if everyone felt passionate about developing their town and community?

  • What could happen if those unaccustomed to having a voice and being leaders were given the confidence to bring their visions to life?

  • What can you imagine for Southend?

Imagine ignites the imagination of the community and builds confidence that anyone can become “the change they want to see in the world”.

Imagine (www.imaginechicago.org) began in Chicago in 1992, with one person (Bliss Browne) setting aside her banking career to investigate people’s visions for the city. The programme flourished and new community projects are initiated frequently. Imagine encourages those that wouldn’t consider themselves as leaders, often teenagers, to lead community development – working with very small amounts of money and with unpaid volunteers.

Imagine has been so successful it is now global, with the concept of community empowerment being applied to nations – such as Singapore and Nepal. In Britain, Imagine has been successfully applied in St Helens and Birmingham.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s recently formed Appreciative Inquiry Network has been inspired by the stories of empowerment and conversations have begun about possibilities locally.

We’ve talked about the great things happening in Southend already, and the possibilities offered by awakening and joining up the imaginations of all of us; especially those who may feel disempowered – more used to having things happen to them or having decisions made for them.

This meeting…

We invite you to come along to hear more about Imagine and the impact programmes have had around the world.

Most of the meeting will explore your ideas about the possibilities of such a programme in Southend-on-Sea. You will have the opportunity to network with colleagues and partners from across the town and hear some interesting and inspiring visions!

Tea, coffee, juice and biscuits will be available.

To confirm your place, please email sherryfuller@southend.gov.uk or phone me on 01702 215547. Please let me know if you have any requirements for access, interpreting or refreshments.
