A Simpler Life p.1

What do you do after perfecting the organic garden of your dreams?  Find a bigger site and start all over again.  That’s what we did.  After spending nine years developing an acre in North Yorkshire we suddenly realised this was not going to be anywhere near big enough if we were going to achieve our ultimate aim of being totally self-sufficient.  So we sold up and went looking for somewhere else.  Nine years later, having spent the interim living in a van/ two derelict cottages/ and house-sitting a 500 acre forest complete with log-cabin in Canada, our search is now finally at an end.

We have just moved into a stone hut (42m2) surrounded by 2.5 hectares of south-facing hillside in the Sierra de Aracena, Andalucia, Spain.  And it couldn’t be better.  There’s no mains services, it’s 2km from the nearest neighbour and road, and the climate is perfect.  At the moment we’re busy trying to get the house ready for winter, which seems crazy when it’s in the 40s C outside.  But already have got a few shrubs and trees going from seed in fish boxes.  While also trying to getting the word out that we’d like to make contact with anyone who is interested in what we’re doing.  To swap and share ideas/ seeds & cuttings, even come and help with the planting of what will eventually be a forest garden.  If you are interested get in touch either by email (monkeyandsofia@yahoo.co.uk) or by post (El Pocito, Almonaster la Real, 21350, HUELVA, Spain).  Looking forward to hearing from you.
