South East Essex Friends of the Earth – keeping the pressure on…

As part of our networking efforts I’ve been to a meeting of the local branch of Friends of the Earth – which motto is”Making life better for people by inspiring solutions to environmental problems“.

I was impressed by their agenda packed full with plans to meet local MP’s and work on local and national campaigns concerning the environment and particularly climate change. The group celebrated that day the passing of the Climate Change Bill which Foe campaigned hard for since 2005. The main point of the bill is that UK is to cut its greenhouse gases emissions by 80% by 2050. Thanks to the campaigning efforts yearly targets were kept in the bill making it more effective. Foe don’t stop there as now they are working on a campaign to make sure as much as possible of our energy will come from renewable sources so click on the picture and support their efforts.

I had the opportunity to tell the group a bit about Transition Town Westcliff and Transition Towns in general. I’ve explained that to save the climate and prepare for the end of cheap fuel to do a smooth transition to a powered down future it is important that change has to happen at different levels: individual choices and lifestyles, at the community level by people working together and on the national and global level by appropriate legislation and institutions.

Transition Town Westcliff is focusing on the community – level harnessing the enthusiasm and creativity of local people and creating a space for them to discuss about and work on issues important to them. Read the blog entries from the events and you’ll see what we mean by that.

It was great to see another local group working on climate change and campainging for more renewable energy and I see our work complementing each other. We will stay in touch and support each other in the efforts to create a liveable, abundant, carbon-constrained and powered down future.
